Advent Retreat

ADVENT - SEASON OF GROWING LIGHT; How do you grow light in the darkness. By listening to the pain of the world, the pain of our sisters and brothers, walking alongside them with a loving, listening heart and serving their freedom. What is it to be a Christian in the 21st Century/Reflecting upon the experience of this multi-cultural parish community which gathers both oceans of pain and traum and also joy and praise around the altar, we will explore how the Word and the pain of the World can change our priorities and bring us New Life.

Rev Richard McKay has been a Roman Catholic priest of the Clifton Diocese for 46 years, working in impoverished Outer Estate and Inner City parishes, as well as being RC Chaplin at HM Prison Bristol. Influenced by both Charismatic Renewal and Liberation Theology he finds the reality of oppression and poverty the source for theology and mission. Richard is an advocate for racial justice and has been instrumental in establishing 'Borderlands', a charity to work with marginalised people, particularly asylum seekers and refugees. His parish has over 60 nationalities represented in the congregation week by week, and the worship reflects this cultural diversity. Justice, equality and freedom are at the heart of his ministry.

Mary Hooper has shared and developed ministry with Richard for over 30 years. She is a founding Trustee of Filwood Hope, an ecumenical outreach project on an improverished council estate in Bristol. She is also a founding Trustee of Borderlands Charity and has long and enduring relationships with many in the asylum and refugee community. She is committed to a new vision of the Churhc, a Church open and in this retreat there will be times to share and discuss, but also long periods of silence.
