Alexander Technique and Centering Prayer

This highly unusual weekend workshop is offered by Jacqueline Evans, an Alexander Technique teacher for whom Alexander principles profoundly deepen the experience of centering prayer. It is intended for people who already have an ongoing centering prayer or meditation practice.

Jacqueline trialled out two one-day workshops in 2015, which were highly praised by every participant. They all loved the course, but thought it was far too short given the huge amount of material on offer. The logical next step was for Jacqueline to try a whole weekend of teaching.

Jacqueline will be teaching techniques for rediscovering your inherent ease and freedom, which help to calm breathing and quieten your mind. She writes: “Centering prayer has been transformational for me in my spiritual life. In my time before Alexander Technique I found it difficult - my thinking would run away with me, so that, far from being present, I’d often find myself miles away. Rather than self-emptying, I would be rigid with resistance and tensions. The clinging, I realised, was in my body just as much as in my mind and emotions. I now see how much our minds tend to lead us away from the present and how reconnecting with our bodies helps bring us back to the here and now. The contraction and expansion of our bodies is a very reliable guide: when we’re contracted we are in our small selves, and when we’re releasing we are alive and present - in our whole Selves.”

Jacqueline will help you look at ways of allowing the release of tension by using some of the principles of Alexander Technique. There will be plenty of practice but you will also be discussing questions such as ‘How can we release our whole being into unconditional acceptance?’, ‘How can we simply allow ourselves to be present?’ and ‘Where does love and acceptance go when we ‘try’ to still (control?) ourselves whilst meditating?’.

N.B. Please note that Jacqueline is co-leading a longer retreat on 18 to 24 September, entitled ‘Finding Fulfilment’.
