Alexander Technique and Centering Prayer

This highly unusual weekend workshop is offered by Jacqueline Evans, an Alexander Technique teacher for whom Alexander principles profoundly deepen the experience of Centering Prayer. It is intended for people who would like to maintain or begin an ongoing Centering Prayer practice, with a special focus on techniques that help to rediscover natural ease and freedom in the body as well as quieten the mind.

What is Centering Prayer? It has been described as “simply sitting in silence, open to God’s love and our love for God. This prayer is beyond thoughts, emotions or sensations. Like being with a very close friend, where words are not required, Centering Prayer brings our relationship with God to a level deeper than conversation to pure communion.”

Jacqueline explains: “Centering Prayer has been transformational for me in my spiritual life. In my time before Alexander Technique I found it difficult - my thinking would run away with me, so that, far from being present, I’d often find myself miles away. Rather than self-emptying, I would be rigid with resistance and tensions. The clinging, I realised, was in my body just as much as in my mind and emotions. A crucial step is therefore to learn to release this clinging. Once we are able to do this, we are more able to let go of thoughts and fall into the Unconditional Love within and around us. We can be alive and present - in our whole Selves.”

Jacqueline will help you to look at ways of allowing the release of tension by using some of the principles of Alexander Technique. There will be plenty of practice but you will also be considering questions such as ‘What does it mean to let go?’, ‘How can we simply allow ourselves to be present’ and ‘Where does love and acceptance go when we ‘try’ to still (control?) ourselves whilst meditating?’.

Led by: Jacqueline Evans
