Believing in Butterflies

Much loved retreat leader Margaret Silf recalls seeing a cartoon showing a butterfly driving a sports car. A policeman is inspecting the butterfly’s driving licence, looking suspiciously at the ID photo, which depicts a caterpillar. The butterfly explains apologetically: ‘Sorry, it’s an old photo’.

Margaret asks: “Could the caterpillar ever have imagined itself as a butterfly (let alone a butterfly driving a fast sports car!)? What about us? Are we complacent caterpillars, thoughtlessly consuming the world around us? Or are we struggling in the dark and messy meltdown of the chrysalis? Are we driving through life on an outgrown image of ourselves, and of God, that locks us into the assumption that nothing much will ever change?

During this weekend we will explore the great metamorphosis of spiritual evolution in which we are engaged, and how we can help to birth our inner butterfly and become co-creators of a different kind of future for humanity.”

Margaret is an ecumenical lay Christian committed to working across and beyond the denominational divides and to accompanying people on their spiritual journey. She is the author of a number of books on the spiritual journey for 21st century pilgrims who may or may not identify with institutional religion. She is also a much loved retreat leader at Ammerdown: “Margaret gave us an abundance of gentle yet thought-provoking insights which, together with her lively sense of humour, made our time with her a delight and an inspiration”; “She always manages to be deeply spiritual and yet down at everyone’s level. One cannot fault her”.

*The weekend stands alone, but would also offer a helpful introduction to the journey THAT Margaret will embark on the following week. We are offering a special rate of £650 for both events and £30 for the stay in-between.
