Bobbin Lace Making Summer School

* It might be possible to come for a shorter time depending on availability. Please contact the Ammerdown Centre to enquire.

This Summer School offers a rare opportunity for a time of total lace making indulgence in which like minded students can come together to share and extend their knowledge and bobbin lace skills in a relaxed but stimulating atmosphere. It is suitable for students of all levels of experience, including complete beginners.

Pompi Parry, who has been teaching lace making for over thirty years, can teach

a wide range of both traditional and contemporary techniques so there is always something new for students to try. Alternatively, students can choose to work on an ongoing project with Pompi’s help. In fact, Pompi likes to make contact with her students one month before the course to discuss the work they wish to do.

Two of Pompi’s specialities are Polychrome Blonde, a silk lace from Normandy, and Downton Lace, a traditional lace from Wiltshire, but Pompi can offer tuition on many other different techniques (although Honiton, Withof and Duchess laces will not be taught).

This will be primarily a practical course teaching various lace making techniques, but displays publications and discussion will be used to widen the lace makers’ knowledge of both historical laces and current trends. Students will also be encouraged to display their own work.

Pompi gives lectures and teaches lace making in England and the USA, has exhibited internationally and has demonstrated lace making in France and Japan. She travels extensively to study many different aspects of both the practical and historical sides of Lace, Dress and Textiles and in fact never comes back from her travels without something new and exciting to share with her students.

Students will normally be expected to provide their own lace making equipment. However this can be provided for beginners by prior arrangement.

Led by: Pompi Parry

Please arrive by 3.30pm on Sunday. Course ends with lunch on Saturday.*
