Christmas is coming, and we are all looking for these elusive Christmas presents that will delight our loved ones. And what better choice than hand-made ones! This weekend course will give you a chance to do just that, under the expert guidance of much loved calligrapher and artist Josie Brown.
She will combine tuition in lettering and craft-based skills to enable you to produce small seasonal pieces of work for your own use or to give as highly personalised gifts.
Beginners with no experience of calligraphy will start with an introduction to the ‘broad-edge’ and learn a script suitable for the intended projects. They will practise with different sized nibs as well as with colour and metallic media for exciting effects.
Those with some prior knowledge of calligraphy will have the opportunity to select which script/s they wish to use on their projects. Some gilding techniques will be included – using gold, copper, aluminium and variegated imitation gold.
Everyone will then be offered tuition in various crafts skills in order to make their own master pieces – from embellished tags, wrapping paper or cards to boxes, decorations or tiny folded books. Expect a dazzling medley of gorgeous items to give or to keep!
Josie has been a professional scribe, heraldic artist and illuminator for over thirty years. She is an accredited tutor for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society, a founder member of Gloucestershire Lettering Arts, and has completed commissions for the academic, military, public and private sectors. Josie currently teaches workshops and summer schools around the country. She has a particular passion for ancient and modern gilding techniques. She is an enthusiastic and thorough teacher, who is universally praised by everyone she teaches.
