Chinese Brush Painting Taster Workshop- The Four Gentlemen

Maggie Cross is one of our most popular tutors. This is not surprising: she has shown herself to be a superb teacher as well as a gifted artist, and our guests have been amazed at what they managed to achieve in the space of a few days – even complete beginners.

This taster workshop is for people who have not had a chance to have a go at Chinese Brush Painting. The theme has been carefully chosen by Maggie. She explains: “The first subjects that any student of traditional Chinese painting ever learns are the four gentlemen: plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. They each have their own symbolism, which I will explain before demonstrating them, using established Chinese painting materials and techniques. You will be shown how to paint in the freestyle manner so typical of Chinese painting using only a few strokes to create a lively composition; and you will then have an opportunity to have a go yourself, with me as your guide and mentor”.

Maggie spent her childhood in Hong Kong, where she studied brush painting and also learnt to speak Cantonese and write Chinese characters. She is a member of The Chinese Brush Painters’ Society and the Society of Floral Painters. She regularly exhibits her work and also frequently lectures and teaches on the subject. She has published three books.

Maximum number 12, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Participants will be given a list of basic items to bring with them. Traditional brush painting materials will be available for loan or sale from the tutor.

Led by: Maggie Cross

Please arrive by 6pm on Friday. Course ends with lunch on Monday.
