God in Christian and Muslim thought

God in Christian and Muslim thought.

Christianity and Islam each describe themselves as monotheistic faiths. Belief in one God is central to both – the Christian Creed begins, ‘We believe in one God’, while the Muslim Shahada begins, ‘There is no god but God’. But behind these similarities lie radical differences: for Christians the one God is three Persons and makes himself known in Jesus Christ; for Muslims God is one without parts or divisions, beyond human understanding.

This talk will explore these understandings of God, and will explain how they sum up the similarities and differences between the two faiths. David Thomas has been a student and teacher of Islam for nearly 50 years. He has worked in Anglican parishes and chaplaincy, and taught Islam and Christian-Muslim relations in Birmingham University. He is currently Professor of Christianity and Islam, and also Canon Theologian of Wells Cathedral.
