Gregorian Chant

We study the structure, form and history of Gregorian chant, how it emerged as the musical language for the first 1200 years of Christianity and its influence on the Western Church ever since. We acquire a basic understanding of the Hexachord system, appreciating the subdivisions of the old modes into authentic and plagal ‘tones’. We study the various influences on the chant and learn simple neumes and their interpretation. Some voice coaching is included and our study of psalmody and simple antiphons culminates in the performance of the First Vespers of Pentecost.
