Jesus in the Bible and Qur'an

Jesus Christ is almost as well-known in Islam as in Christianity. He features prominently in the Qur’an, where many of the stories about him recall the Gospels and depict a figure as mysterious as the Jesus of the New Testament. Born to a virgin, a teacher, healer and miracle worker, intimate with God and ascending to God’s presence – but he denies being God’s son, and he does not die.

The differences between the Jesus of the Gospels and Jesus of the Qur’an point to basic distinctions between Christianity and Islam. This talk will explore these, and ask how they help and hinder understanding between the faiths.David Thomas has been a student and teacher of Islam for nearly 50 years. He has worked in Anglican parishes and chaplaincy, and taught Islam and Christian-Muslim relations in Birmingham University. He is currently Professor of Christianity and Islam, and also Canon Theologian of Wells Cathedral
