Lettering for Pots, Boxes, Plaques or Glass

This busy three day course by expert calligrapher and art tutor Josie Brown offers a chance to learn the art of applying lettering to different surfaces and produce some gorgeous works like the ones on the photo.

The course will start with an introduction to a suitable script followed by ways of modifying standard scripts and lettering for use on various 3-D surfaces or objects. It will then move on to the art of lettering the objects themselves. You will tackle all sorts of surfaces - from terra cotta, glass and fine-grained wood to papier mache, acetate, slate and pebbles. An explanation will be given of which materials will offer the best results for use inside or outdoors, and then a demonstration of how to use them effectively. There will also be an opportunity to try some gilding techniques, using Dutch metals which can be highly polished or distressed – giving several interesting finishes.

Everyone will go home with a number of completed items, which could be kept or given as treasured gifts.

The course is suitable for beginners as well as calligraphers with some experience.

Josie Brown is one of Ammerdown’s best loved tutors, thanks to her superb abilities as a teacher and artist. She has been a professional scribe, heraldic artist and illuminator for over thirty years, and has completed commissions for the academic, military, public and private sectors. She is also an accredited tutor for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society and currently teaches workshops and summer schools round the country.
