Making Friends with the Bible

How does one introduce John Bell? A spiritual leader, a preacher, a music-maker, a broadcaster? Yes, he is all this, but he is also so much more, as those who have taken part in one of John’s previous Ammerdown retreats will tell you: “John has nourished my soul. He combines a true love and knowledge of the scriptures with thought-provoking honesty and integrity mixed with wonderful warmth and humour”; “One of the best speakers I have ever encountered; John is brilliant at sharing his knowledge and insights in a non-judgemental way and with humility and humour”.

For his 2017 Ammerdown retreat, John has chosen the theme of ‘Making Friends with the Bible’. He explains: “For some (but not all) people, the Bible is accorded an unhealthy reverence. Some see it as a book of problems, others a book of answers; some in reading it can hardly scan a line without being reminded of the voice of their childhood priest or pastor; others never open it, but keep it handy just in case. And for some others, the Bible is seen as a book which is primarily for the intellect and can best be opened by people who have spent time in a seminary.

Essentially the Bible is a book of public truth. It is meant for and belongs to the community of believers and non-believers, and in this retreat we will engage with it as with a friend - open to things we have heard before and expecting some things which we may never have realised, free to ask questions of the text and open to what our own experience and that of others may help us to hear in the variety of tones of the voice of God who breathes life into the ancient texts.”

Led by: John Bell

Please arrive by 6pm on Monday. Course ends with lunch on Friday.
