Poetry as a Vital Spiritual Exercise

Poetry can be used as a spiritual exercise – entering the world of a particular poem and
seeing what happens there and how you react to it. The argument will be made that Poetry really matters – that indeed it is vital. It is important for Interfaith groups to look at one another’s religious texts. But it would be good sometimes to meet together on neutral ground around a poem that simply addresses us all as fellow human beings. The evening will provide opportunities to test out in practice the contention that poetry can be a vital spiritual exercise.

Peter Chave is a United Reformed Church minister who lives in Bath. Throughout his ministry he has been involved in Christian ecumenism and in Interfaith relations, especially Christian-Jewish dialogue. He has written the booklet ‘The Holocaust – its relevance to every Christian’ published by the Council of Christians and Jews.
