Printmaking and Collage - Techniques and Experimentation

This unusual course, led by qualified art teacher Jos Blake, will be friendly and informal, and suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience. The idea is to learn about both printmaking and collage separately, and then experiment using them together. The themes of landscape, architecture and/or natural forms will be our starting points – inspired, we hope, by the beautiful environment provided by Ammerdown.

Printmaking is a very exciting medium, not always predictable, but usually highly rewarding.

You will learn a range of different techniques, including lino, collagraphic, simple intaglio and mono printing. Jos will guide you through each process and you will be given time to explore each one. You will be using both water-based and oil-based printing inks.

As for collage, you will discover that it is much more than ‘cutting and sticking’! This part of the course is designed to help you explore how to imply depth and form by using flat blocks of paper. It is about learning the art of simplification, the importance of shape and line, and how to use a scalpel blade, scissors or tearing to ‘draw’.

We will look at the work of a range of artists working in this way and learn from them how to use the principles of composition to plan your own pieces. You will be using a range of papers, black and white, colour and/or patterned paper.

The tutor will bring along some images and reference items (eg seed heads), but feel free to bring some of your own.

Jos is a fully qualified art teacher with twenty years experience teaching art in secondary schools. For the past six years, she has been teaching adults, running a continual programme of lessons to an ever increasing number of students. She also regularly teaches the Society for Disabled Artists.
