Sensing God Through Creativity

Using creative skills can be an adult way of playing as children play - a way of relaxing, being refreshed and renewed, learning about ourselves and finding out things we didn’t know, maybe even experiencing a new-found freedom. In the busyness of life where time is often spent serving others, it is all too easy to forget the childlike delight and wonder essential to appreciating the gift of the Kingdom of God.

This course is about providing an opportunity to sense God’s presence through creative exploration. The focus is not on the end result, but rather on the act of creating and being with the process - rather like doodling on a scrap of paper or watching a feather float to the ground. By taking time to reflect on such experiences, we can become increasingly aware of our feelings, our desires and our direction in life.

The result? Those who have taken part in previous years have been amazed at how much God revealed Himself in the process – and also at how much they learnt about themselves s by ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’…

There will be a wide variety of both familiar and unfamiliar art materials to choose from – ranging from paper and fabrics to clay and sand, from painting and gluing to constructing and deconstructing. Each day will offer time to ‘play’, time to reflect and time to share with others, alongside times of shared worship and prayer.

This workshop/retreat will be led by Revd Anna Garvie, an Anglican priest and a retired healthcare chaplain. Anna is also a spiritual director with a special interest in art therapy and will be available to give one to one accompaniment if requested.
