Tikkun Olam- ('Mending the World' in Hebrew) - Called to be a prophet

Sr Maureena Fritz, from the Bat Kol Institute in Jerusalem, is rated by our guests as an exceptional teacher and retreat leader, who has the rare gift of bringing the Word of God to life and making it relevant to our own personal journeys. “Amazing teacher and beautiful person” and “We hung on her every word! What a fantastic, amazing and gracious woman. I feel privileged to have met her, and do hope there will be a next time!”.

Thankfully there is to be a next time, as we have persuaded Sr Maureena to come again in 2017 all the way from Jerusalem. This time, she will explore the meaning of the Hebrew term ‘Tikkun Olam’, which means ‘mending the world’ in Hebrew.

Sr Maureena writes: “Mending the world is building relationships. In Buber’s words, all real living is meeting. Our five senses, tasting, touching, seeing, hearing, smelling, are our portals to ‘what is’. Through them we encounter the world and God - Whoever goes forth in truth to meet the world goes forth to meet God who reaches out to humans (Heschel, ‘God in Search of Man’). The topics we will examine during the week include: God as the Makom (Place) of the world; alertness to the Divine Presence; teshuva (repentance, not blotting out sin but elevating it); Balaam, the prophet (Numbers 22-24); Jesus, the prophet; you, born to become a prophet; and the vocabulary of prophecy”.

Maureena will examine her chosen theme by introducing diverse forms of interpretation of Scripture, which will focus attention not only on the sacred text but also on the world around us and on divine reality. Questions and discussions will be actively encouraged. Songs and film will accompany the study of Biblical texts.

Maureena, a Sister of our Lady of Sion, is Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Theology, USMC, University of Toronto, and is the Founder of the Bat Kol Institute in Jerusalem, whose purpose is defined as “Christians Studying the Bible within its Jewish Milieu, using Jewish sources”. She teaches at the Institute and leads workshops worldwide. She has written several books on praying with the Hebrew Scriptures.
