Transcendental Cinema

“Art attracts us only by what it reveals of our most secret self.” Jean-Luc Godard

There’s a long tradition of film-making which recognises that the silver screen can be a mirror which reflects our inner being. This workshop explores how watching certain types of films can offer experiences which speak to our deeper selves. We’ll look at classic films by directors like Bresson, Dreyer and Tarkovsky to identify the distinctive elements of ‘transcendental style’ in cinema. We’ll then examine how this tradition continues in modern cinema in the hands of directors such as Mallick, Dumont and Zvyagintsev.

You don’t need to recognise any of these names to enjoy this workshop! If you like watching films and are willing to open your eyes and ears to some new ways of experiencing cinema, then this is for you. We’ll look at extracts from some 20 films and have two evening screenings of complete films. There’ll be plenty of opportunity to discuss your reactions to the films with others.
