Zen Gifts

This Zen sesshin will be a silent retreat of Zen practice led by Fr Robert Kennedy (SJ) Roshi. We will spend much of our time in sitting meditation (zazen) interspersed with walking meditation (kinhin), but each day there will also be a Teisho (talk) and an opportunity for Daisan – a one to one interview with Roshi Kennedy. In our meditation we will practise attentiveness to the breath which, together with the stillness of the body, helps to free the mind from its ordinary mental activities and offers an insight into the oneness of life. This insight reveals to us our own human potential and calls us to use this in the service of others. It brings us to the present moment, clarifying and supporting our readiness to meet the ever-changing circumstances of daily life.

Zen is a gift which can deepen the contemplative experience for Christians and for those from any faith or tradition. Our days start early with zazen at 6.25am and then, for those who wish, end with a simple Christian Eucharist (presided over by Fr Robert Kennedy) celebrated in the spirit of our Zen encounter.

There will be a short introduction for those new to Zen on the first evening.

Fr Robert Kennedy is both a Jesuit priest and a Zen master (Roshi) in the White Plum Asangha. He lives in Jersey City in the USA. He is the author of ‘Zen Spirit, Christian Spirit’ and ‘Zen Gifts to Christians’.

*Cost:

Full retreat: £479
Ends on Monday pm: £335

N.B. For those interested in Zen practice, please note that Zazenkai, which are a good introduction to a longer Zen retreat, are also being held at Ammerdown on Saturday 5 March (option to extend to Sunday for a short retreat), Saturday 17 September (option to extend to Sunday for a short retreat) and Saturday 3 December led by Mark Scholefield.
