An Introduction to Chinese Painting - The Four Gentlemen

The weekend will be an introductory course focusing on ‘the Four Gentlemen’, which are bamboo, plum blossom, orchid and chrysanthemum. Maggie writes: “The Four Gentlemen incorporate all the basic techniques of traditional Chinese painting and most students will begin by studying these subjects. They are surrounded by symbolism which I will happily talk about in addition to teaching you the techniques of handling the Chinese brush and materials to produce lively paintings”.

Led by: Maggie Cross

Please arrive by 6pm on Friday. Course ends with lunch on Sunday.

Following the success of Maggie Cross’ week-long Chinese Brush Painting courses at Ammerdown, we have received many requests for shorter ‘taster’ courses. We are therefore delighted that Maggie has agreed to run a weekend in 2013 in addition to her usual longer course on 16 to 21 June.

The weekend will be an introductory course focusing on ‘the Four Gentlemen’, which are bamboo, plum blossom, orchid and chrysanthemum. Please note that, although the weekend is primarily aimed at beginners, it would also suit improvers as Maggie will advise on an individual basis.

Maggie Cross spent her childhood in Hong Kong, where she studied brush painting and also learnt to speak Cantonese and write Chinese characters. She is a member of The Chinese Brush Painters’ Society and the Society of Floral Painters. She regularly exhibits her work and also frequently lectures and teaches on the subject. She has also recently completed her third book. Her gifts as a tutor and painter are praised by all who work with her: “Maggie’s work is magical and she is a natural encourager”; “A very gifted teacher who teaches with great understanding and a tremendous love of her subject”.

Please note: Participants will be given a list of basic items to bring with them.  Traditional brush painting materials will be available for loan or sale from the tutor.
