Learning the Ancient Craft of Enamelling on Copper

Enamelling is a wonderful ancient craft that consists of applying coloured glass powders to copper and firing in a kiln for two minutes or so. For those who know how to do it, the results are always stunning but can also be full of surprises as the cooling process sometimes produces unexpected and fascinating effects... Enamelling is, however, a bit of a dying art, as not many tutors have the experience or time to teach their craft. Ammerdown is therefore delighted to welcome Dilys Fisher as one of its new course tutors.

Led by: Dilys Fisher

Please arrive by noon on Monday. Course ends with lunch on Friday.

Enamelling is a wonderful ancient craft that consists of applying coloured glass powders to copper and firing in a kiln for approximately two minutes. For those who know how to do it, the results are always stunning but can also be full of surprises as the cooling process sometimes produces unexpected and fascinating effects… Enamelling is, however, a bit of a dying art, as not many tutors have the experience or time to teach their craft. This is why the Ammerdown Centre is delighted to welcome Dilys Fisher as one of its new course tutors in 2013.

Dilys has been enamelling for over 20 years and belongs to the Guild of Enamellers. To begin with she focussed on jewellery and later extended into other three dimensional works such as leaf sculptures, wall plaques and masks. With new techniques still to try, she is keen to help others learn from what she has achieved so far. Once asked what she most enjoyed about enamelling herself Dilys said “being able to put a number of ingredients together with heat and in doing so nurture and coax something unique and amazing to happen”. Dilys was a tutor at Urchfont Manor for 7 years until its closure in September 2012.

Dilys’ courses at Ammerdown will be restricted to a maximum of 8 students in order to make sure she can provide sufficient individual attention. The aim is to learn or improve a wide range of techniques. The courses are therefore suitable for both beginners and improvers. In fact, Dilys promises that those completely new to enamelling will find this a very rewarding week, whilst those with some experience will enjoy the chance to work on methods in more depth. Examples of students work can be seen on Dilys’ website at www.rosymdesign.com.

All equipment will be provided by the tutor, who is happy to have contact with students prior to the courses so that she can discuss their plans with them, and ensure she can provide the equipment required. You can contact Dilys via her email address rosymdesign@aol.com.

Cost: N.B There will be an additional charge for material used during the course. It should in the region of £30 but the final cost will depend on what each participant chooses to make.

Dily's is also leading another course from 18 to 22 November.
