Interfaith Week Event -

An Invitation to Wells Cathedral

Wells Cathedral must be the largest religious building in Somerset. It is called a cathedral church because it contains the throne (from cathedra, the Greek word for ‘chair’) of the Anglican Bishop of Bath and Wells. The Cathedral is the central church of Anglican Christians in Somerset, though of course it is for everyone, worshippers, tourists, people of all religions and people of none. It receives about 250,000 visitors each year.

Like cathedrals throughout the country, Wells Cathedral serves the main purpose of celebrating God and offering worship to God. Through each day there is a round of services from early morning to the evening, continuing a tradition in this place that stretches back more than a thousand years.

The service of Evensong is held each evening throughout the year. It follows the distinctive Anglican pattern of worship that goes back at least four centuries, combining readings from the Bible with prayers and music. The music is sung by a choir of men, boys and girls, who lead the service together with the clergy of the Cathedral.

As a special mark of Interfaith Week, this invitation to visit the Cathedral and to be present at Evensong on Wednesday 14thNovember, goes out to people of all faiths and of none. The service of Evensong may be new to you, but it will hopefully be inspiring. Beforehand there will be a tour of the Cathedral, and afterwards there will be a time to reflect together on what the service means, to ask questions and to offer comparisons with forms of worship in other faiths.

The visit will take the following form:

3.30 pm arrival and tour of the cathedral

4.30 pm tea

5.15 pm Evensong in the Cathedral quire

6.00 pm meeting with clergy of the Cathedral for questions and discussion

7.00 pm departure

We very much hope you will accept this invitation, and we look forward to sharing the Cathedral with you.

The Very Reverend John Davies

Dean of Wells
